The shorthanded JV Knights scored an impressive come-from-behind win Saturday against a vastly improved Northville squad. After falling behind early and trailing by as many as 12, Middleburgh began to mount a defensive stronghold with all seven eligible players contributing. Alex Hartzel went in just before half to help shut down an attempted surge by the Falcons and to keep the MCS within striking distance, trailing 35-30 at the end of two quarters.
A strategy change in halftime huddle proved to be the deciding factor as the Knights came out reborn, surgically picking apart everything Northville tried and never looking back. Led by Eric Pickering’s 15 points with three shots from deep and Billy Martinez’s 13, the boys in green steamrolled to a 17-4 fourth quarter, securing a 56-48 win. Brady Stemmle scored a great layup late in the second quarter just as the tide began to turn. Lucas Shaw had 7 points but it was his defensive prowess that locked down any hope the opposition may have had, creating havoc for the opposing ball-handlers and go-to athletes. John Shaw contributed 10 points and had more than that in rebounds, dominating the paint. Jaesen Hoop contributed a big 9, including a late three point dagger to seal Northville’s fate.
This was the most complete game we have played so far and our ball movement in the second half especially was a treat to witness. The boys never never quit and they made every adjustment we asked of them. Their reward was a big time victory and the joy of playing a fantastic game on both ends.
We have a rematch against visiting Cherry Valley Monday and Scho-Burgh at home Tuesday. Please come support us!
