Students witnessed their Spanish and Science curriculums come alive when they visited Puerto Rico this summer. For one week, Spanish 3 students explored the culture and landscapes, learned the history, sampled the cuisine and practiced the language.

They also snorkeled, learned to surf and kayaked in a bioluminescent bay at night. While the students were learning, they were also performing a service. They participated in an eco-friendly challenge to clean up debris on the beach. Spanish 3 teacher Lisa Himme said the students became ambassadors for the school and the Middleburgh community.

“Our MCS students were complimented by the local population for this activity,” said Himme. “This was a theme that we heard repeatedly during our week. We are so proud of them.”

“We are grateful to the MCS administration and the members of the board of education who supported our endeavor to provide this educational experience,” Himme said.Students stand in a group at the beach.
