With the end of this school year approaching, plans are underway for summer activities and the 2024-25 school year. It’s not too early to make appointments for physicals and immunizations to ensure that your student is ready to participate.
Education law Article 19 and Regulations of the Commissioner of Education require physical examinations of public students. Physicals are required:
- For students entering the school district for the first time, and in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grades.
- In order to participate in strenuous physical activity, such as interscholastic athletics (these must be up to date yearly for sports).
- In order to obtain an employment certificate (working papers).
Public Health Law Section 2164 requires students to be up to date on immunizations in order to attend public school. Immunization requirements:
- All students in Pre-K and Kindergarten must be up to date on immunizations in order to attend school. All incoming grade 6 students must receive a Tdap vaccine. All incoming grade 7 students must receive a meningitis vaccine. All incoming seniors must receive a second meningitis vaccine.
- If a student is not up to date when school starts, they will have 14 days to get their immunizations or they cannot attend school.
If your child is enrolled in Bassett’s School-Based Health Center, they can get their physicals and immunizations at school. Physicals and immunizations can also be done through the child’s physician or personal care provider.
Reminder: Parents and guardians must pick up any personal medications stored in the nurses’ offices by the last day of school.
