Austin Johns etched his name in the annals of Section 2 Boys Soccer history with a groundbreaking achievement on Oct. 11. His 140th career goal marked a significant milestone, breaking the Section 2 scoring record.
The boys varsity soccer team’s recent 6-1 victory over Mekeel showcased the team’s talent. Austin contributed two goals and one assist, as did Nate W., while Eric P. delivered one goal and one assist. Billy M. scored a goal, and Liam D. added an assist, adding to the team’s triumph. Austin credits his teammates with helping him break the record.
“This achievement is a product of hard work, discipline and teammates who constantly support and push each other,” said Austin. “I’m just making sure I’m using the platform God’s given me to its fullest potential, and so far, it’s going pretty well.”
Coach Johns, who is also Austin’s father, emphasized Austin’s commitment to his craft, praising not only his on-field accomplishments but also his character.
“Austin has devoted a great deal of time and effort to becoming the player that he is today,” said Coach Johns. “In addition to what he has accomplished on the field, we are equally proud of the student, role model and person that he is.”
Coach Johns says all his players understand the importance of having a strong value system.
“As a program, we stress the importance of maintaining a high level of character above all,” said Johns. “Thank you to all of his teammates, both past and present, for making this possible.”
Although Austin has set a record, his Oct. 11 mark on Section 2 may not be the final word. The season isn’t over, so the next record he breaks may be his own.
