MCS Knights history was made on Sept. 12 when Austin Johns broke the school’s all-time scoring record for boys soccer. Austin scored his 88th career goal with a game-winning goal against OESJ, 3-2.
Austin celebrated with his teammates after scoring the goal with just 10 seconds left in a game that saw him make two goals and two assists for the Knights.
“The feeling when my record-breaking goal went in was a mixture of amazing emotions. Anyone who knows me knows that I’ll do just about anything to win.” — Austin Johns
But the Middleburgh junior was quick to point out that his team always comes first. “Seeing all of the countless hours and hard work pay off like this just continues to push me to be even better,” he said, “but I don’t train a lot to set records. I train to make sure I’m the best player for my team and teammates to put them in positions to win games and be successful. All the individual success is great, but the ultimate goal is to bring section titles and league titles to Middleburgh.”
This is Austin’s fourth year playing varsity soccer for the Knights. His goal on Monday broke the record of 88 goals set by Bobby Herodes, Class of 1983. Austin now has 92 career goals and counting. Austin also enjoys success off the field, having been named to the National Honor Society at Middleburgh.
