Middleburgh Jr./Sr. Principal Matthew Sloane has been named the 2024 NY State Secondary Principal of the Year by the School Administrators’ Association of New York State (SAANYS). According to the organization, the award is given annually to a middle or high school principal who has set the pace, character, and quality of education for the students in his or her school.
SAANYS selection process is involved, with a panel of 7 judges statewide reviewing application packets and supporting documents over a period of months before a decision is made. MCS Superintendent Mark Place said the recognition is well-deserved.
“Mr. Sloane has served the students and staff at MCS for the past six years,” said Place. “He is dedicated, hard working, and a fierce advocate for his students.”
The results of Sloane’s efforts are evident in student achievement; the school is now recognized as one of the Top 10 High Schools in the Capital Region as rated by US News and World Report.
Sloane’s colleagues also appreciate his efforts. Speaking to SAANYS, Middleburgh Elementary School Principal Amy Irwin said Sloane “encourages innovative thinking for his faculty and his students. He is always open to new ideas and fresh thinking when it comes to teaching and learning. He is an advocate for all students, keeping in constant communication with families through good times and difficult times.”
In November, Sloane will represent New York State as sponsored by SAANYS’ national affiliate, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). NASSP will select the national principal of the year from all the state finalists.
