“This accolade helps to affirm why hard work and hours of practice pay off.” – Cameryn Shultes
Cameryn Shultes is being recognized for her achievements in academics, athletics, and community service at the Capital District Sports Women of the Year Awards Gala on Monday, August 8. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. at Proctors GE Theatre in Schenectady.
The Capital District Sports Women of the Year organization honors ten of the best and brightest female student athletes from high schools and colleges in the region. Cameryn is a scholar-athlete who was a high-level competitor in bowling, soccer, and softball.
“Middleburgh Central has provided me with the opportunity to participate in a number of scholastic and athletic programs that have allowed me to flourish,” Cameryn said.
The Class of 2022 Salutatorian was also a member of the National Junior Honor Society and the National Honor Society. She earned NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete recognition in all three sports. She served as the Athletic Association Treasurer, and completed the Capital Region BOCES New Visions Health Careers program.
“These programs have allowed me to develop my leadership skills, communication skills, and enhanced my skills to participate as a team member that will benefit me as I continue my studies at SUNY Geneseo as a biology major in a pre-med track,” she said.
Her parents, Brynda and Richard Shultes, are not surprised by her field of study, “From a young age, she had an interest in science, especially the biological sciences. She would watch videos about the human body, some of its disorders, and would research to find out how to correct some of the ailments. These actions helped Cameryn to determine that she wanted to go into the medical field. Cameryn’s participation in the New Visions program this year helped to solidify her choice to pursue medicine. She really enjoyed participating in the various department rotations which provided her with a first hand account of the work that each of the departments entailed.“
As a part of the National Honor Society, Cameryn is required to get 10 plus hours of community service per year but most often would exceed that. She has been involved in numerous community service projects. In 2022, she volunteered at St. Peter’s Hospital making Christmas/Holiday gift baskets for all SPHP staff. She also volunteered at Becky’s House, cleaning the house and yard. Becky’s House is affiliated with St. Peter’s Hospital and provides housing for families with relatives or children in the hospital for extended periods of time. Cameryn is also volunteering at the St. Peter’s Cancer Care Center.
“We have witnessed so much growth in Cameryn over the past couple of years. She has excelled with athletics and academics while working part time and participating in community events. We are very humbled by the accomplishments that Cameryn has earned and are incredibly grateful to all who have helped to push, coach, guide, teach, and care for her which has allowed her to become the amazing person that she is,” her parents said.
Cameryn was the 2022 Mohawk League Girls Soccer Defensive MVP this past season and earned Section 2 First Team All-Star honors for the second time. She was an NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete throughout her soccer career. She also was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Star First Team for the second time.
Cameryn was a Section 2 First Team All-Star in Bowling and WAC First Team selection in every season of her career at Middleburgh, plus was an NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete since 2016. She was the league MVP in bowling, had the league’s highest average and made the Albany Times Union Bowling All Star team in 2022.
On the softball field, Cameryn earned her third NYSPHSAA scholar-athlete honor of her career in 2022.
“At this time, I have not committed to participate on any of their athletic teams,” Cameryn said.
