Friends, family and colleagues attended the June 1 Board of Education meeting to support teachers who are retiring and being granted tenure. “It’s the happiest time of year and the happiest occasion for the lucky few in front of us,” Superintendent Dunn addressed the attendees. The district recognized five retiring educators and granted five teachers tenure.
Superintendent Dunn said, “Tenure in our system in Middleburgh schools is all about protecting our beloved, courageous teachers – to engage, invigorate and empower our young people with critical thinking skills in a democracy. We are all committed to honoring those dear rights that have been long fought over for many generations and we are all committed to protecting our teachers who engage our young learners through the lens of our board goals.”

When it was time to honor the years of service for our new retirees, Superintendent Dunn said he was searching for a quote that would “capture the power of this moment”. He read a quote from Marcus Aurelius, “Remember how often you have postponed minding your interest, and let slip those opportunities the gods have given you. It is now high time to consider what sort of world you are part of, and from what kind of governor of it you are descended; that you have a set period assigned you to act in, and unless you improve it to brighten and compose your thoughts, it will quickly run off with you, and be lost beyond recovery.” Mr. Dunn added, “what I am taking from this quote and hope to give to you is that you earned your time and paid your dues and now it’s your time, so don’t bugger it up.”
