Every year, thousands of students across New York state sit for a variety of state standardized exams. The test a student takes depends on their grade and high school studies: English Language Arts and mathematics exams are taken by students in grades 3-8 and Regents exams are taken by students in grades 9-12 based on subject, such as English, Algebra, Global Studies, US History, Living Environment, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics and languages Spanish and French. As with any standardized tests, the results are a moment in time. Educators know that the true mark of a student's ability rests with his or her report cards, class participation, activities and a host of other indicators.
Today, the state Education Department released these results of the state ELA and mathematics tests taken by students in May.
Here is the entire state press release (PDF) about the release of the testing information.
Here are the results of every school in New York state (PDF). Middleburgh's individual results can be found on pages 1534-1535 of the document.
On the English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics exams administered in grades 3-8, student median scale scores are ranked in one of four "levels." Student scores in Levels 1 and 2 mean a child is eligible for and may receive extra help - Academic Intervention Services (AIS) - to help boost their future scores and achievement. Scores in Levels 3 and 4 are considered meeting and exceeding the state's expectations.
In it's press release, the state indicates that some changes were made to the exams this year involving the number of test questions on the ELA exams that would qualify a student for the top-tiered Level 4 score. As a result, most grades saw declines in the number of students achieving at Level 4 on the May tests.
Parents will receive direct mailings about their child's individual performance on these tests.

New York State Board of Regents approves Common Core Learning Standards for Pre-School to grade 12. Schools to begin using them in 2011-12 school year.
Elementary Principal Amy Lennon and Middle School/High School Principal Lori Petrosino discussed the testing results with the Board of Education at its Oct. 27 meeting. Download the meeting minutes (PDF).
Test results for students in grades 3-8 are listed in four levels. A score in levels 4 and 3 indicate that the child has met the state standards in that subject. Results in levels 2 or 1 indicate the child may need extra assistance. Specific testing results have been mailed to parents. **PLEASE NOTE: In July 2010, the state Education Department
announced that 'cut scores' were being increased on the ELA and
mathematics examinations, beginning with the exams taken in May
2010. Raising the 'cut score' meant that fewer students would
score in the coveted levels 3 and 4, thereby meeting state
standards.
For example, the state raised the 'cut score' for being
considered as achieving in level 3 on a hypothetical exam from
650 to 670. That meant that, last year, a child receiving a
score of 660 would have been considered meeting state standards
in level 3; this year, the same child would have been in level 2
and considered needed extra assistance.
Learn more about the change in 'cut scores' this past summer.
