In light of this season's severe winter weather, the MCS
Board of Education has approved the addition of two full days to
the 2016-17 academic calendar in order to make up for a
shortfall in instructional time. Wednesday, April 19, and
Thursday, April 20 -- originally days designated part of April's
spring recess -- will now be regular, full-attendance days for
students and staff. Please read the letter from Superintendent
Michele Weaver below for additional details.
Letter from the Superintendent
To all families,
As you’re aware, this winter has been a particularly
challenging one – delivering our region far more winter storms
than we’ve seen in the last few years. Following last week’s
snowfall, the Middleburgh Central School District has had to
utilize all allotted emergency days built into the 2016-17
district calendar, plus two additional snow days.
At Middleburgh Central Schools, providing a quality education
to our students is a major priority, and ensuring that our staff
and faculty spend adequate instructional time with our students
is a necessity. We must fulfill our mandated responsibility for
school to be “in session” for a total of 180 school days.
To accomplish this, we must make revisions to the district
calendar, which the Board of Education approved during this
week's meeting. The state Department of Education has advised
that scheduled vacation days must be adjusted to make up any
shortfall in instructional time when extra snow days are used.
School will now be in session on Wednesday, April 19 and
Thursday, April 20. These days were originally designated as
spring recess days but will now be full instructional days for
I realize these changes may impact preexisting family and
staff plans, but please understand that all public schools are
bound by the Commissioner of Education to follow through on
providing students with 180 days of instruction each school year
– regardless of any circumstances.
I thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions
about these changes, please contact the district office at (518)
